Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Blisters On The Foot

Posted on Thu, 20 Oct 2016
Question: I was hospitalized about 2 months ago for cellulitus eminating from a blister on the side of my foot. In hospital for 2 days and 10 days of oral antibiotics. Now the same area, which had recovered, is now swollen and there is a large red spot around the old blister site. The doctors were worried about the infection going to my bone. Is it possible I now have an infected bone? There are no cuts or openings where an infection could occur and I am stumped. It is getting more swollen and painful. What should I do? The area is also warm to the touch.

Brief Answer:
it is possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the infection may extend to the surrounding tissues, this is possible. It requires special tests to detect it, either a scintigraphy or an MRI scan. There is no doubt that warmth, swelling and pain are signs of inflammation and the recent infection makes it almost certain that this is a new infection. Cellulitis and erysipelas (they're almost the same kind of infection) make the area prone to new such infections. The potential bone involvement will have to be assessed with one of the aforementioned tests.

Kind Regards!
