Question: I am a female 61 years old. About 10 days ago I fell and bruised my left shin and knee.
This afternoon after work I noticed my foot and ankle are a bit swollen. The bruising is almost gone on my leg, a bit left on the outside of my foot. I am currently elevating and icing, Should I do something else?

Brief Answer:
Apply heat....

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking HealthcareMagic.

I am Dr.Endri Katro and i will answer at your questions.

First of all, I want to say that I am happy to know that you are feeling better after the fall.

It is normal that after 10 days your extremities get a little swollen. There is nothing to be worried.

Applying ice at this point will not help your body (your ankle in this case) as it will make it harder to heal. Applying ice is a great move during the first hours or days after the trauma (within the last 48 hours.

Then after a few days, like in your case,it is best to apply heat in the area where the bruises were, because it will help with the healing process.

Keep elevating your leg to help with the drainage but if you can try to apply a heat blanket or heating pad, or even a hot, wet towel in your ankle.

If you have any other question, don't hesitate to contact me again.

Wishing you the best.

Thank you! I will apply heat. It was upsetting, I have never had that happen before but the bruising was pretty extensive.
I am seldom sick so I tend to over react.

Brief Answer:
You are welcome

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Don't worry. It is normal to over react. In fact, it is better to over react than to neglect something (in medicine at least)

Remember. Never leave heating pads or towels on for extended periods of time or while sleeping.

Don’t use cold or heat packs if you have diabetes, kidney conditions or in the presence of infection.

Hope I have answered your query. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.
