Question: My husband is 62 yrs old. His ankles swell if he wears socks plus they itch and have a rash. His lower arms also have a rash and itch. He is tired but feels like that is due to winter weather. Is this something we need to be concerned about?

Concern about heart and kidney disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.Your husband is having swelling of ankles and feels tired. These can be signs of some systemic disease so you should be concerned. You can get his heart function test and kidney function test to rule out heart and kidney disease. He is also having rash and iching so he should consult dermatologist(skin specialist) .It is also advisable to test blood sugar to rule out diabetes. For iching he can take cetrizine and multivitamin supplements may give some relief in tiredness. You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing your husband a good health.
Take care.

I need to correct something.....his ankles don't swell. When he wears socks, his legs above the top of the socks swell. If he doesn't wear socks, there's no swelling. He recently gave blood and was told his blood pressure and pulse are normal. Does this information change your response?

Brief Answer:
First treat rash.Rash may be causing this swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
Your husband is having pitting edema( swelling that gives way on pressure). Main causes of this is heart disease, kidney disease and hypoproteinemia ( liver disease) etc. So these causes should be excluded by investigation. He was recently had normal BP and pulse so he is less likely to be having heart disease. So you can look for other causes. This pitting edema can be due to rash and allergy caused by it. So I think he should first consult dermatologist ( skin specialist) as all problems may be due to rash, so get treated rash and if still problem persists then look for systemic causes.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
