Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: My 19 year old daughter had swollen ankles last Saturday. She went to doctor, they did blood work and her kidney & liver are functioning properly. they did scans on her legs - nothing. Now, her hands are swollen. She just texted me that her hands are shaking and she can barfely hold things. Her hands and arms feel like dead weight.

She is healthy, not medications. She's 5'7" 120 lbs, normal blood pressure.

Needs work up and management

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
I read your question and i understand your concern. At age of 19 only with no weight gain, normal functioning kidneys and liver, i don't see any reason to be worried about. The swelling you are mentioning might be slight edema due to immobility common be bed ridden people even for a few days. Inability to hold hands and tremors should get the locl causes ruled out like vascular insufficiencies, venous thrombosis or neurological causes, once done there should not be any other reason to be worried about it at all.

Talk to her doctor, complete detailed history, physical examination and clinical correlation will sort things out. Too early to comment on differentials and possibilities.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan

She is active, works in a nursing home where she lifts patients regularly, so I don't see how edema could apply.

Detailed Answer:
Then the puffiness is not explained by these symptoms and correlating liver and kidney functions. Local causes need to be ruled out. Hormonal imbalances like hypothyroidism should be considered. Those can cause puffiness and swelling in arms and feet. Cardiac causes should be considered if she has some shortness of breath or increased swellling after mobility. Get local causes rule dout by doppler studies.

I hope it helps.
