Suggest Treatment For Swollen Glands In Throat And Recurring Terrible Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: Hi I had a cold a few weeks ago and now I'm fun most of the day, but my throat and glands swell up every night and my terrible cough returns. Tested negative for strep so baffled what it might be - allergies? My doc gave me a course of antibiotics thinking it was a sinus infection - but my symptoms persist and cough wakes me up at night

Brief Answer:
you may be having acid reflux

Detailed Answer:
Hello

There can be three possibilities for the cough you are experiencing.

The first one , which is more likely is due to acid reflux from the stomach a condition called as GERD , this will typically cause cough at night. You will need an endoscopic evaluation to confirm this and can be started on anti reflux measures , which will control the cough.

The second possibility may be a sinus infection/congestion , this usually follows an episode of cold and can cause a constant trickle of discharge in the throat resulting in cough. This needs to be confirmed by an endoscopic examination and x rays of the skull. You will nee a longer course of antibiotics and nasal sprays for curing this.

The third possibility is a condition called as post viral bronchiolitis , which generally follows a cold and results in hyper active airway, this may last form 2 weeks to even 3-4 months and results in cough , specially at night. You will need to meet a chest physician for this , he will examine you and may ask for a chest xray , and treat you accordingly.

Please discuss this with your doctor!

Take care!
