Question: My husband drank alcohol for years. He quit drinking about 2 months ago. His belly is extended like a 9 month pregnant women. We went to the hospital yesterday. His pain level was s 7 he had not taken his Eleve, which he takes twice a day. They took some blood test and a urine sample. They never waited for the test to come back before releasing him. They told him to go see the nurse praction for a bile tap on his liver. They knew full well a nurse at our little clinic could not perform this. He can't eat but a couple bites a day. He drinks about 8 glasses of water and some O.J. His urine was rust color. Please help him!

Brief Answer:
He probably has a failed liver from alcoholic cirrhosis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your husband is going through. From the information you have provided, appears he has ascites. This is typical for someone with a failed liver from alcohol induced liver cirrhosis. If the nurse at your clinic cannot do this procedure, I will suggest that you go back and let them know. However, this procedure can be carried out by NP and am not exactly sure why she is unable to do so. Talk back to the doctors and also ask what they think the exact prognosis of your husband is. I am afraid they think he might not live long again and are simply providing palliative care. Just make sure this is not what the thinking at this time is. Keep me posted on this.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask of more information and clarifications if need be.
