Question: Hi,

My name is XXXX 24 year old software engineer from XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

I was living at a place where we used to get hard water (borewell water). We lived there for almost a year or more. My hair started getting thinner because of the water.. I used to have heavy hair fall.

Now I shifted to a place where we get soft, natural sources water. My hairfall has almost been stopped now but I still can see thin hair and scalp below it. Will hairs grow eventually? What sort of medicines / oil / shampoo shall I use to get back thick hairs?

There is no specific area targetted for hairfall, but it is even on all part of my scalp.

Please help :-)

Regards,
XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of Androgenetic Alopecia need to be considered

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

I have gone throuh your query and I understand that you are concerned about thinning and increased hair shedding.

Though people do notice slight increase in hair shedding with hard water but it is never to such an extent so as to be bothersome Or lead to visible scalp. If hard water would have been the cause then in that case everyone in your family and neighbourhood would be similarly affected. You could actually be suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia which is a common cause of increased hair shedding and thinning in males, mainly from the center part of scalp i.e front, mid and vertex part of scalp. Androgenetic alopecia may also be associted with receding anterior hair line and widening/ broadening of angles of anterior hair line in males. Androgenetic alopecia has a genetic component, therefore there may be others affected in family like father, brother, cousins etc though not all.

I would be able to confirm this possibility if you can upload a few images gor my review. You may upload images either at "Reports Section" Or You may also mail me at YYYY@YYYY with the subject line as Attn:Dr.Kakkar.

Treatment of hair thinning in males is with topical minoxidil 5% solution, to be applied twice daily at scalp skin. Tablet Finasteride is specific treatment for androgenetic alopecia in males. Goal of medical treatment is to arrest Or slow down further progression and reverse early thinning/ miniaturisation.

Brief Answer:
I suggest topical minoxidil solution and Oral finasteride tablet

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thank you. I have reviewed the Images.
Yes, there is some visible thinning i.e reduced density in the center part of scalp. There is no receding anterior hair line as of now. Your hair loss is still at a very early stage but it is androgenetic type of hair loss.
I would suggest you to start with minoxidil 5% solution. Use it twice daily, 1ml quantity, at scalp skin. In morning, apply after shampoo and on air dried scalp. Start applying it from center of scalp and gradually move outwards.
I would also suggest you a tablet of finasteride 1 mg once daily.
This treatment should be continued for at least 6-12 months and you should notice good results in terms of increased volume and density of hair and decreased hair shedding.
These are prescription medications and should be taken under supervision of a doctor. I suggest that you visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for his/her opinion on your hair problem as well as for the needful.

Regards
