Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Meralgia Paresthetica

Question: Hello - my mom is 57 years old and has high cholesterol/triglycerides and diabetic. She currently takes 500 mg melmet twice a day for diabetes, rosuvastatin for cholesterol once a day and calcium supplement (shelcal HD) once a day. For the past few weeks, she has been experiencing soreness, weakness, burning and pricking sensation in the left thigh. Walking does not make her feel anything - but even if she touches that area, she feels burning/prickly sensation and seems to increase. Could you please advise if this may be due to diet, physical activity or possibly a side effect of any of the medication? She is vegetarian, takes moderate oil, no sugar/sweets, but less physical activity (typically 3-4 kims a day). Please let me know.

Brief Answer:
Possibly meralgia

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
The symptoms of the query are quite suggestive of a possible meralgia paresthetica.
This is a nerve related issue that's quite common on diabetes patients.
The sugars affect the nerves.
The damage to the nerves cause this problem.

The other possibility is a lumbar complaint causing the same symptoms.
So I need to know if she has any backache or leg pain moving down from back to the foot end.

In the former case you need to test Nerve conduction study and on the latter a MRI LS SPINE.

In the former condition , she will need a better sugar control with pregabalin. In the latter situation , pregabalin will be needed with physiotherapy.

I would need to examine her neurologically. I thus suggest meeting a neurologist in the local area for the same.

Let me know the reports and examination findings.
Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal
