Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Narrowing Or Blockage Of Common Bile Duct

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: I had ERCP last February of 2014. I had narrowing of the common bile duct and spincter of oddi dysfunction. (I had may gallbladder removed in XXXXXXX of 2007). After the procedure I had no problems until just about 3 weeks ago. The discomfort under my rib cage is back and I can especially feel it after I eat. Biopsies were done during ERCP and came back negative. My surgeon said he opened up the bile duct, cut some and put in a stint during the procedure. I thought the stint was removed before the end of the procedure. I have been so healthy and now I am worried. I will call them for an appointment. Could it be blocked again? or could I have scarring or adhesions? What do you think and what do you recommend? Thank You, I am 61 years old, female and very healthy. I weigh 122 lbs. and am active. I do not take any medications but I had to have antibiotics this year for a sinus infection and a dog bite.

Brief Answer:
Common bile duct narrowing can be the case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The narrowing or blockage of common bile duct is possible. It can happen even with stent inserted. It can somehow collapse.

Typical symptoms present with an obstruction in this area are upper right abdominal pain which radiates to the back or even right shoulder. Dark urine and whitish stool appears. Skin can be itchy.
It is also possible that a stone is present in the bile duct.
Adhesions are rather not possible if there was no open abdomen surgery.

I suggest you to consult your doctor. Blood work (CBC, AST, ALT, GGTP, AP, bilirubin level) should be done and abdominal ultrasound.
If liver enzymes will be elevated, ERCP should be repeated.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
