Suggest Treatment For Tarsal Coalition

Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: Second opinion valued; RE: Tarsal coalition:
An orthopedist specialist at one of the nation's leading teaching universities diagnosed a family member with a rather grim prognosis (age=23, sex = F) with the abovementioned diagnosis in addition to ankle pain due to a fracture in calcaneo-navicular bones area. X-Rays confirm diagnosis with physical exam and accompanying symptoms. Walking ankle/leg cast employed for 3 weeks to attempt to avoid surgery. In my opinion, again, the prognosis of a modified and sedentary lifestyle is less than desirable. Need someone to think outside the box. Fresh and intriguing comments welcome. Reply for further details.

Best regards.

Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. I think it can be treated by plaster cast followed by physiotherapy and analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. I can serve you better if you can upload the x ray.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

Thank you. The treatment you suggest is what is being employed currently; I am still dissatisfied with the prognosis. This is the absolute most satisfactory projection for such a life changing affliction? I thought I had a general Szacz-esque temperament learnt from the failure of the psychiatric enterprise; however, I'm finding my disdain for not what is diagnosed but rather what is Not, far surpassing, in light...Perhaps, I'm being too wordy...this is the best orthos can do? I'm at a loss...

Brief Answer:
Operative treatment may be needed if pain persists.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome back
I think treatment of recent fracture is cast followed by physiotherapy and analgesic such as ibuprofen and mobilisation excercises. If pain persist due to tarsal coalition(which was probably present before fracture) then further treatment will be required in form of operation. I can serve you better by seeing x ray so upload the x ray if possible.
You can discuss with your doctor about it.
Everything else already discussed.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.
