Suggest Treatment For Tendonitis

Question: Hello, again, Dr. Nishan. As I wrote before, my 80 year old mother was diagnosed with posterior tibial tendinosis which can be rather painful. The doctor is reluctant to give her cortisone shots, and surgery is a last resort. She is not comfortable with the brace he gave her to wear either. So although she will go back to the doctor in two weeks, she is very uncomfortable since this problem began about 8 weeks ago. What other alternatives are there, and/or is it merely a matter of waiting for the inflammation and pain to go away on its own without surgery, excessive medication or cortisone? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Hot compress will also help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The inflammation of tendon can subside with pain killers, hot compress and rest. The brace is given to provide rest to her knee. Steroid shots will help in reducing the inflammation earlier but rest will still be needed to allow the tendon to heal. It is best to wait and continue with pain killers. She can do a hot compress thrice a day and apply a local analgesic gel for better relief.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you. How long should this continue? I suggested she try Tramadol but she doesn't want to, and she's impatient because it's already been eight weeks. She also says she cannot tolerate the brace when walking.

Brief Answer:
Oral muscle relaxants can help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Usually tendonitis heal in 8-10 weeks if given proper rest. She can take oral muscle relaxants and use an elastic brace that is more comfortable. She can get an MRI scan done to see the progress.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Actually she did her MRI report weeks ago that showed a severe tendinosis that felt worse than a few weeks previous. I told her that probably Tylenol Three etc. insufficient. She says she cannot tolerate Robaxin relaxant. That's my mother.....

Consider steroid shots.

if the tendinosis is severe and is worse than before then it is better to consider getting a steroid shot. Hot compress will also help.
