Question: I have considerable tension in my neck. I am told that its arthritis and I need to just deal with it. There is a lot of grinding and popping going on and it is relieved temporarily by having it cracked by a friend chiropractor. Could be the source of my headaches. What do you think my long term plan should be?

Brief Answer:
glucosamine/physical therapy/chiropractor/stretching

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
It is true that arthritis in the neck can cause a lot of neck pain and headaches. There are several ways to deal wit this pain and I will list some options for you. Taking the supplement glucosamine can help build up the cartilage and is very helpful at decreasing pain in many people with joint pains or arthritis.
Regular stretching such as you might do you yoga class or as advised by a physical therapist would also be helpful. Warm heat can also be used to loosen up the muscles and relieve pain.
Regular chiropractic care, not just being seen when you have pain, may also be helpful to you. Acupuncture may also be helpful to you in relieving your neck tension and headaches.
I hope you get some relief soon,
Dr. Robinson
