Brief Answer:
It could be due to genetic or environmental factor

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.

There are different causes of hypothyroidism

Common ones are:

1. Iodine deficiency- as iodine is needed for thyroid hormone production

2. Damage to thyroid

Auto immune - antibodies produces in body is destroying your thyroid - Hashimoto's hypothyroidism

After infections, radiation etc which damage the thyroid

3. Pituitary disorders - rare cause as pituitary is regulating the thyroid hormone synthesis.

If you are from an iodine rich area, the most common cause is auto immune ( Hashimoto's) hypothyroidism. This is genetically transmitted and more common in girls.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you.

Regards,
