Suggest Treatment For Tingling Sensation In Hands And Intermittent Numbness

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, in January I noticed tingling in my hands from time to time. Nothing serious. In March I started getting burning, itching in my shins and feet. Both large toes felt numb from time to time. For the last 3 months it comes for weeks straight and then is either gone or minimal for weeks. I broke my left toe in Feb around when my feet started. I was pain free for 3 weeks recently and broke my left middle toe on fathers day in which it came roaring back. I have also noticed a lot of varicose veins in both feet and legs which I never had before. MY CBC was normal and I also tested negative for Lymes, Celiac, Rheumatiod arthritis, ANA reflex and my Sed Rate was 2. I am a 6'2, 220lb 42 year old male in good shape. I have NO idea what to do next. My ankle relex test was normal and well as vibration test. XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Varicose veins,of course, can commonly present with numbness and sometimes tingling in lower limbs. So,you should seek treatment for it.However, tingling in hands is not explained by varicose veins. So,I would like to rule out the other common causes of such symptoms. Please get a Blood sugar(fasting) done to rule out Diabetes.A Nerve conduction study of all four limbs should also be done,to look for the involvement of nerves.Further, please tell whether you drink alcohol(on a regular basis) or not?
Meanwhile, please start taking methylcobalamin supplementation and antioxidants as these will be of benefit.

Please follow-up if you have further queries.

I had both a nerve conduction test and EMG. Both were normal. I also had MRIs of lumbar and spine that were normal. They tested my blood for Diabetes and that was normal as well. The burning and itching are mostly in my shins and feet. My toes feel wood like sometimes. I am very frustrated as my local neurologist tells me I'm normal. Being my WBC was 5.7 and Myers Sed Rate was 2 out of 20, would that rule out any diseases or infections. I am very worried and just want to be normal again.

Brief Answer:
Varicose veins treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

With these investigations being normal,Varicose veins appear to be the causative factor of the symptoms.Anxiety may be playing its role as well.

I suggest you to seek treatment for varicose veins and observe for the improvement.Simultaneously, please start doing regular mental relaxation exercises like meditation/yoga.This will help to some extent,as well.

Also, please be on methycobalamin supplementation. This may help in improving neuropathic changes in small nerves, whose abnormality is not detected on Nerve conduction tests.

WBC count and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR)appears to be normal. It usually increases in infections.

I would like to track your clinical developments. So,please be in follow-up, in case, you have any further queries, any time.
Meanwhile,if you don't have any questions, please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.
