Question : I kissed my wife on her ear. She felt pain and then her hearing was affected. She has tinnitus plus a 'broken speaker' disortion. There has been no improvement in the week or so since, despite having the ear stringed. Her doctor could not see if she had ruptured her eardrum. Is it possible that her cochlea has been permanently damaged?

YOu wife has had ear pain and loss of hearing for over a week. Her doctor was unable to visualize the eardrum so we do not known if it is ruptured. I think because she has not shown any improvement that she needs to see a specialist in ear diseases. Her ear problem could be a ruptured eardrum or it could be Menierie's disease. Without having the proper ear testing and imaging studies we can not guess as to the cause and the prognosis of her problem.

Please take her to an ear nose and throat specialist for complete hearing and ear evaluation.
