Question: I am a 48 year old woman. Diagnosed with a 5mm atrial septal defect 2years ago. Left to right shunt. I am suddenly very very tired. Dizziness most days sometimes so dizzy it's hard to drive or walk. Wake up with headaches. Have right middle chest pain everyday sometimes a burning sensation between chest all of which comes and goes. 3 weeks ago I suddenly broke out in a sweat got so dizzy they had to lay me down and felt like I could throw up. Felt better after about 30 minutes but stayed very dizzy. Took about two weeks before i felt good again. Is all of this normal for asd or is something else wrong

Brief Answer:
Please, see you cardiologist for follow up evaluation!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. I have reviewed your information and think the ASD is becoming symptomatic. Most would not cause symptoms and when they do, they need to be corrected. I will suggest that you get a follow up ultrasound of the heart and compare the findings to earlier ones. This would help in making the decision to intervene or not at this time. Management would be closely linked to this.

Let me know what your take is about the above advice.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you Dr. I haven't felt right for a while. I am trying to get in with another specialist. My old one wasn't very helpful and no longer takes my insurance. Can I die from this and are the procedures to fix this dangerous for someone my age? My mother passed away suddenly from heart attack at 59. I assume she might of had the same thing

Many stay silent!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The best thing to do is to follow up and get it addressed. It cannot cause instant death but if not addressed, it can lead to undesired consequences. Follow up with a doctor who would get on top of this and provide definitive answers about it.

I wish you well and keep me posted.
