Question : I have a toothache. I also have some Tylenol w/ codeine left from a recent tooth I had pulled. It says to take 1 every 4 to 6 hrs as needed for pain but doesn't say how many doses can be taken in 24 hrs. Can I alternate it with ibuprofen? Would a prescription for antibiotics be helpful before I see the dentist? I have read that any dental procedure done with an infection can cause serious heart problems.
Brief Answer:
Yes, you can alternate Ibuprofen with Tylonol+codeine.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM,
I read carefully your question.
You can take Tylonol with codeine every 4-6 hours difference between each other, so 4-6 doses/day. Of course in between you can put Ibuprofen 400mg, with 6 hours difference between each other. Take these only if needed.
You wont need antibiotics if you will need a filling, but only if you will do an extraction. Anyway, the antibiotic used is comonly Amoxicillin.
Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Brief Answer:
Ibuprofen should help decrease the inflamation and pain.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Thank you for the follow-up question.
Tooth ache is sign of irritation of the surrounded tissues around nerves, but not necessarily sign of infection. If you have cheek swelling, or fever, then you would need antibiotics for sure. Otherwise, only Ibuprofen should help to lower the inflamation and the pain. Use it more then Tylonol.
Hope this is helpful.
Take care.
