Suggest Treatment For Toothache Caused After A Root Canal Treatment

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: I have had part one of a root canal performed about 3 weeks ago and will being going back for part 2 shortly. Tonight, for the first time since the initial root canal I noticed pain after eating something crunchy, but the pain went away. Several hours later I began having a severe pulsating toothache. I took 4 ibuprofen (800 mg.) which did not help. I then took my migraine pain med (Fiurocet) in hopes that would help. I am still having severe pain. My dentist won't be in until Monday and it is late Friday night. I think I may need an antibiotic. Do you have any suggestions, as I don't know how I am going to deal with this pain until Monday. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
failed RCT, tooth infection, penicillin.

Detailed Answer:
Pain could be because of the remnent infection or improper root canal treatment like missed canals or over filling of the canals. Other possible cause could be infection from the adjacent tooth. It can also arise if you would have bitten on any hard structure.

Consult your oral physician and take a radiograph like IOPAR to rule out the above mentioned infection of the tooth.

If I am your treating doctor I would have put you on a course of antibiotics (capsule amoxicillin 500mg) along with analgesic(ibuprofen). After completing the course you can consult your dentist for further treatment. Do not bite on hard things till you consult the dentist.
Please note that antibiotic is not available over the counter.

You have not mentioned any history of biting on any hard things and history of trauma.

I hope my answer will help you. take care. if any queries are there reply me back.
