Suggest Treatment For Transient Double Vision In A Patient With High BP

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: I have had transient double vision for about 1-l/2 yrs. and finally took it seriously.
The new eye dr. said she thinks it is cardiac related and I should see a cardiologist
"sooner rather than later". (I am in process of transferring into a complete hospital/
dr. group). But I have also read medications can cause double vision also. The eye
dr. ruled out all the terrible things like brain tumor, m.gravis & MS. Could my medication
"chlorthalidone" 25 mg. cause double vision? I am also on Lisinopdil 40 for some months
& I strongly suspect it makes me feel sick. I've been coughing a lot and nauseated and
have some breathing problems but my double vision was occurring before I started that
medication. Tomorrow I am calling a new cardiologist (I just got this news about the
possible cardiac connection yesterday). I am upset that I just read some articles online that
say double vision is occurring in people AFTER they have had a heart attack. Of course
you can only give an opinion and hopefully next week I will get into a cardiologist office.
Oh, I am a female and am 73 yrs. old. I have
suffered from high blood pressure ever since I had a complete hysterectomy 20 years ago.
This is a wonderful service - thank you so much for your opinion. What has been your
experience with people with my problem? XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
We need to rule out vascular causes like transient ischemia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your questions.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having transient double vision since 1-1/2 years.

Transient double vision is usually not caused by eye problems. Eye problems like extraocular muscle palsies will cause consistent double vision. Since your eye doctor would have ruled out eye problems no need to be worried about the eye problems.

Transient double vision usually occur in vascular problems like transient ischemic attacks and require evaluation to rule out vascular causes.

Since you are a known hypertensive and anti-hypertensive drugs can lead to transient double vision. The drugs you are using for treatment of hypertension like chlorthalidone and Lisnopidil can both cause few side effects on the eye like dizziness, blurred vision, floaters or few spots in the visual field and transient double vision. But these side effects are relatively rare.

My experience with the people with these complaints are
Transient double vision is usually seen in systemic problems like diabetes, hypertension and cardiac problems either because of the problem itself or because of the drugs used to treat them.

But I advice you to go for evaluation by cardiologist to rule out vascular problems which can lead to transient ischemic attack and do discuss with him regarding the side effect of the drugs.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you
With regards
