Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HealthcareMagic!
The question you are asking is a tough one. If the expiration date is 2012 then it means it’s 5 years past the expiry date so technically speaking I have to say that it may not be safe to use it anymore and it may achieve its desired effect. So the recommended action would certainly be to contact your doctor in order to get a new prescription.
That being said many drugs may retain their properties years past the expiration date, there have been several studies to suggest that (of course that varies among drugs and depending on the conditions they were stored in). I know how intense trigeminal neuropathic pain can be and that you may not be able to obtain an appointment with your doctor right away. So if that is indeed the case it might be worth and safe to use the expired Carbamazepine until you can get a prescription. It might not be as effective as the non-expired product but may help until you can get your hands on it.
I remain at your disposal for other questions.
