Suggest Treatment For Trochanter Bursitis

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Dear Doctor, I am a 70 year old male, 6 feet, 240 lbs. . When sleeping on my side I get extreme pains in my hip and thigh that I am lying on (after less than an hour). Changing positions generally gives me eventual relief but the affected spot, just below the hip socket, is still very tender to the touch. The left side is more of a problem.
I don't have any problems walking or short runs. I do have difficulty sleeping on my back all night.
This is a condition that has only occurred recently but is getting worse so that it is causing a lot of sleep loss. Typically i will be awakened by discomfort. It is when I begin to move to a different position that I really feel the sharp pain! When the pain is severe I feel it down in my calf and behind the knee.
I have not seen a doctor yet because I don't know what kind I need. Thinking about going to a Chiropractor. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You are having trochanter bursitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using this site. I have studied your case. You are suffering from trochantric bursitis. In this condition there is fluid accumulation at greater trochanter. Greater trochanter is part of thigh one femur which lies just below hip socket. . It causes pain when patient sleep on that side. I will suggest you following.
1.You need to see a orthopaedic doctor ( bone and joint specialist).
2.He will give you NSAID like Brufen or voveron.
3.Some time needle aspiration of fluid and steroid injection is useful.
4.Sitting in hot tub is also helps.
5. Minor surgery is needed in extreme case when there is no benefit from medicines and injections.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
