Suggest Treatment For Tumor In Pituitary Gland

Posted on Wed, 22 Oct 2014
Question: I have been waiting for MRI results regarding my high prolactin levels.... they started at 86.7 then a week later they were 100.7 On an earlier web post I gave all the details of everything I have been experiencing and after 4 months I finally have some answers...I do have a small tumor on the Pituitary Gland and I am taking Cabergoline for it. The other thing I learned months ago was that I have multiple masses on my Uterus and the doctor says most likely it is just fibroids and I shouldn't be concerned about it but the problem is that I have gained weight rapidly and excessively and I don't know why....I have gained 30 pounds in 4 months! I look pregnant and feel pregnant.....I grow out of all of my clothes, I DO NOT over eat and this is way out of the ordinary...the red flag to me is that this is exactly what my grandma experienced years ago when she was still alive, she too was told not to worry and then she just figured she was fat but it turned out to be Cancer. Not everyone loses weight with Cancer, you can gain it too....Im not saying I have Cancer but I am not sure what is going on. My grandma found out she had a tumor the size of a 9 month pregnant lady and she died at 62 from Ovarian Cancer.....I practically begged my OB GYN to please give me a Hysterectomy to make sure that there is nothing more that I need to be concerned about so he has finally agreed to doing it, we just need to meet to discuss everything.
My question is what could be causing this excessive weight gain, bloating, swelling? Could it be that the fibroids are growing or is it more related to the tumor since it is on the pituitary gland and causing my hormones to be all out of control. I have never been this big and it is really affecting my life in such a bad way...I have a hard time standing for a long time and walking....my feet and legs swell up....thyroid was normal, its not cushings disease, and not sure what else they should check but they pretty much checked it all I think....I am not Diabetic...please help me. If you have any info on Pituitary Gland Tumor please share, thank you.

I forgot to add on my medical history a small "Pituitary Gland Tumor" and multiple masses in uterus... most likely fibroids.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely due to cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Rarely pituitary tumors do cause weight gain. Also if fibroid s are very large ( more than 10cms ) they can cause weight gain.

In your case I feel its more due to that pituitary tumor related hormonal changes that is causing weight gain. ACTH hormone released from pituitary tumors cause weight gain. You can get it checked in any good lab.

I do not think it is ovarian cancer; but I will advise a repeat sonography if hysterectomy isn't planned now to rule it out and also to check growth of fibroids

What is the size of the pituitary tumor exactly ?

Regards

need to know the exact size.

Detailed Answer:

Dear XXXX

Sorry for the delay as my internet was down.

I need to know the exact size as that will decide whether you need surgery or cabergoline is sufficient.
Confirm again and get back to me with details or upload reports.

Hello again,

My doctor does not come back until tomorrow so I still did not get the exact size of the tumor....but I do have another question if that is ok. I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy for the Fibroids, the surgery is for Oct 6th. I haven't had the opportunity to ask my doctor questions yet so I wanted to ask you....is a Laparoscopic Hysterctomy safe if I have had 3 c-sections and a tubal ligation? The nurse scheduling my appt mentioned this would be the type of surgery.

Thank you =)

Brief Answer:
Yes it is totally safe

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Yes it is totally safe. The only thing is that for the surgeon its going to be a difficult surgery as there might be adhesions due to previous surgeries.

But that is not something that you need to be worried about.

Just make sure that the gynecologist doing your operation is an experienced and well trained one.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate your quick response.

I got the exact size of my Pituitary Gland Tumor, it is 6x7x9mm. Do you feel that this size would require surgery? I know it doesn't seem very big but I just want to make sure I am aware of the best way to go. I tried so hard to get a hold of the Endocrinologist that I have only met once....I met her prior to the MRI. My concern was that she hasn't even touched base with me since the MRI results showed this tumor...I left a message for her with my concerns since I am having surgery for the Hysterectomy on Oct 6th I was wondering if she could do my lab work to see how my Prolactin levels are doing so far...not sure if the surgery will affect or interfere with the tumor. I just feel like I am constantly having to play doctor or something....but this website is much more helpful than my own doctors...I am thankful for your help....thank you

Brief Answer:
NO, you will not need surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

Sorry for the delayed reply as i live in a different time zone than you.

NO, you will not need surgery as the size is less than 10 mm in the largest dimension.

But you will need serial MRI at least once in 6 months to see any growth.

If it grows more than 10 mm then you will need surgery.

But you will need a review of the cabergoline drugs and other drugs might also be needed.

Please get an endocrinology review as your case is complex and will need a good physical examination before starting any medications further.

And your hysterectomy will no way affect your prolactin and pituitary but i will advise that you get the endocrinology review before surgery to be on the safe side.
