Suggest Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Sep 2015
Question: I have ulcerative colitis. I was diagnosed 25 years ago,but probably have had it for about 50 years. I take brand name Percocet for the inflammatory pain. I also take many other drugs but they are generic & have little to no effect. Medicare Part D has informed me that they can accept Lialda & Allida--I don't have any experience with these drugs & if they are generics, they will probably do more harm than good!

Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Lialda is MESALAMINE

Detailed Answer:
Good evening....or by now Good morning.

Lialda is a drug which has been shown to induce and maintain UC in remission. As far as I know it is not offered yet as a generic drug and has good statistical evidence for efficacy. You haven't said whether or not you have kidney problems or any allergies because people who are allergic to aspirin or aspirin products may experience problems.

My experience with Lialda in my patients is that they are successful with it. A couple of people did complain of allergic types of reactions but only 1 had to stop because reactions were too severe. The other continued with the medication and the symptoms eventually subsided.

I'm afraid that I have no experience with the 2nd drug you mentioned. I also did a search for it on the internet and could not find anything by that name as a treatment for UC. There is a drug called Alinia that treats diarrhea but this is in the setting of certain parasitic infections and would not be useful for treatment any diarrhea associated with UC.

Perhaps you can look up this 2nd medication and get another spelling for it?

I hope these answers satisfactorily address your questions. If so, may I ask your favor of a HIGH STAR RATING with some written feedback?

Also, if there are no other questions or comments, would you CLOSE THE QUERY on your end so this question can be transacted and archived for further reference by colleagues as necessary?
