Question: I am hypertensive and have had uncontrolled hypertension.
My systolic reading is usually below 140 while my diastolic reading is high that is 95 and even as high as 115.
Yesterday i did an echocardiogram at a public hospital. Saw the doctor wrote diastolic dysfunction in his report.
Could you explain what this means and possible treatment

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would like to explain that diastolic dysfunction is frequently found in patients suffering from hypertension.

Diastolic dysfunction is a result of altered relaxation properties and increased stiffness during diastole.

The pattern of diastolic dysfunction may range from impaired LV relaxation (which is the mildest degree of dysfunction) to restrictive one ( the most severe).

All the above findings are studied by Doppler echo techniques.

Please could you upload your echo report to directly review your diastolic dysfunction degree and other cardiac aspects as well?

Regarding your hypertension I would recommend to discuss with your attending physician for a better optimization of your antihypertensive therapy (addition of other antihypertensive classes such as ACEI, ARBs, etc. or increasing doses of actual drugs).

An appropriate treatment of hypertension will have beneficial effects on reversing diastolic dysfunction (especially in milder forms).

Hope to have been helpful!

Feel free to ask any other questions whenever you need!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri
