default
Posted on Fri, 31 Mar 2017
Question: I have had upper respiratory infection for almost a week. Persistent cough, sore throat, laryngitis, pressure in sinus, fatigue, headache. Started while in Ecuador where we were at 10000 ft for 10 days. Have been home since Tuesday (1000ft) last night had pounding headache, my bp was 175/105. I took my bp pill (losartan) then some Advil for ha pain. This am my bp was still up this am 160/99. Took my bp med again. It is now 126/83. Would over the counter cold medicines do this? What should I take for symptom relief?

Brief Answer:
Infection can raise the bp

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome.
This is Dr Sameer, cardiologist.
Bp is influenced by a lot of things, infection & stress are among those.
As currently you are having a infection & has come out of stressful conditions (high altitude), bp could fluctuate for some days. So it is important to monitor it twice daily. Cold medicine won't effect the bp much. Infact, you have to take them to control cold.
Bp will settle & become stable gradually as the infection will go & your body gets acquainted with the changed weather conditions.
Keep taking your routine dose of Losartan in the morning. If the bp still remains high, you can take a extra dose in the evening too.
Don't worry, you will be fine soon. Your body is just adjusting.
Get well soon.
Thanks & take care
