Doctor advised him only 8 drops during one year baby. I gave him now 2.5 ml. I saw in the medicine bottle that 1 ml= 35 drops aprox. No harm now that i GAVE HIM 2.5 ml. Please advise. Is it ok for the dosage? He stopped crying after 10 minutes of dosage.

Brief Answer:
Self medication is harmful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I can understand your concern.

Colimex contains an anticholinergic which when given in large doses can cause severe side effects.

In children even small doses can cause profound effects because children don't have the similar metabolism as adults.

The recommended dosage for children of age 2 years is 5 to 10 mg, and the drops contain 40mg/ml, so 2.5 ml will contain 100 mg.

You need to take your child to a hospital urgently and get proper treatment.

I hope this will help you.

Best regards

Sir,

Many thanks for your reply.

I took him to the hospital, Hindu Mission. Duty doctor saw him, did not even check his stomach. He said that no need to worry for 2.5 ml. If he feels disturbed, he prescribed syrup bisilac 3.5 ml morning, 3.5 ml night for one day. I did not give it so far.

Sir, any sugestions for counter acting the side effect, since local doctor visit did not help us for side effect?

I have a plan to visit his pediatrician next week for vaccination. Shall I wait till then and ask about side effect for colimex dosage?

Brief Answer:
Please confirm the strength of the medicine in the bottle.

Detailed Answer:
Mrs XXXX,

Thank you for writing back to me.

If the local doctor did not feel that there is a need for urgent admission then it is likely that your son has not developed any toxic effects.

That said, this particular medicine comes in two strengths in syrup form, that is, 40 milligrams per ml pediatrics drops and another is 40 milligrams per 5 ml suspension.

If you gave the 40 milligrams per 5 ml suspension, then the total dosage given would be 20 milligrams in that 2.5 ml, if this is the case then your son will be fine.

But if you gave 2.5 ml of drops that has 40mg/ml then it would cause some toxic effects like dry mouth, difficulty breathing, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrythmias, so it will be necessary to admit him and treat with proper antidotes.

Please confirm the strength of the medicine so that I can guide you better.

(I would like to add that, since it has been more than 8 hours since you gave the medicine, in all likelihood, the medicine would have been removed in the urine by the kidneys, so if your son is active and playful now, then there is nothing to worry, you can relax).

Hope this helps you. Always remember, no self medication.

Kind regards

Sir,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. Its very much understandable & useful.

The bottle shows Activated Dimethicone I.P. 40 mg/ml. But, my son is active & playing. Hope no side effects have come.

I understand the problem due to self medication. I never do self medication for me or family members. But to my XXXXXXX his pediatrician has suggested for self medication and have given a set of medicine names and dosage in each prescription for dry cough/wet cough/chest congestion/stomach infection/ fever/vomiting etc. Thats why we give normally those medicines and then go to doctor, if it did not subside. Moreover, it was night time, so I did not go to doctor.

Sure, will follow your adivse to avoid self medication. Thanks.

Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
If it contains only Semithiocaine then it is not a problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs XXXX,

Thank you again for writing back,

If the medicine in the drops was only semithiocaine, then it is not at all a problem.

Colimex contains Dicyclomine usually, The one you gave your son must be a different one.

It is hazardous to self medicate, it will be in the best interest of your child not to give medicines without the doctors advice.

Relax, and everything will be fine.

Take care.
