Question : I have the start of an urinary tract infection but I can't get to my doctor as I will be leaving town early in the morning. What can I do now?

Thanks for writing in to us.

You are doing the right thing by drinking adequate amounts of water.

Additionally you can take the following measures to control the urinary infection.

1. Please void urine regularly and avoid holding your your bladder. This will help to flush out the infection causing bacteria.

2. Please use public washrooms after taking precautions.

3. Drink cranberry juice during your travel. It will reduce the ability of bacterial multiplication in the urinary system.

4. If possible you can go to a pharmacy and get Alkasol syrup which is available as an over the counter medicine. This can be taken as recommended for 3 to 5 days and will decrease the infection causing environment in the urinary tract.

In case there is no relief and symptoms worsen then please consult a doctor at your destination.
