Posted on Thu, 27 Oct 2016
Question: I am 54 years old. For the past few weeks I have been experiencing vaginal discomfort during intercourse and even some light bleeding right after. It is mostly a burning sensation. Is this normal? What can I do about it? Just want to note that I had a pab smear test three months ago, which was fine.

Brief Answer:
Discuss with your doctor about using estrogen vaginal cream

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
Around this age, there is usually low estrogen levels in the body. This causes thinning of vaginal mucosa. So it is quite common to have discomfort and burning sensation during intercourse. The thin vaginal mucosa gets easily bruised. That could be the reason for the light bleeding that you are seeing after intercourse.

Consult your Gynecologist and get an internal examination done to make sure that there is no other reason for the light bleeding like polyp etc.
Discuss with your doctor about using estrogen vaginal cream for some time. She will evaluate to find out whether that is suitable for you.
In the meantime use lubricants like KY jelly during intercourse.
Make sure to include estrogen rich foods like soy proteins in your diet.

I hope this is helpful.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
