Posted on Tue, 11 Oct 2016
Question: Hello,
my niece is 22 months old. She has been taking Schol's solution (5ml) 3 times a day from May 2016 onwards. She was prescribed this for renal tubular acidosis which was deducted since she was not eating at all and had lost weight. Post the Schol's solution she picked up quite well. A month back she had viral fever which was sorted without antibiotucs. 2 weeks back she again had mild fever for a day and then had cough and cols. She was prescrubed Tyxilix syrup which increased the cough. The doctor then prescribed Sporidex antibiotic. The day we started the cough syrup her appetite came down and further decreased after the antibiotic. The doctor then prescribed Darolac to restore her good bacteria but her appetite has slumped very badly. And she has again lost weight. Now he has prescribed Practin syrup which we have given since yesterday. But baby's appetite remails very very low and she has become cranky. please advise

Brief Answer:
Return of appetite after a minor illness takes some time

Detailed Answer:
Hi....I understand your concern.

By what you say this looks like a viral illness, which is recovering. Usually during the recovery, it will take some time for the appetite to return.

I take this opportunity to tell you certain scientific facts and relieve your distress -

1. An active is a well kid even if she/ he is not eating well.

2. Development of a kid is as important as or I would say even more important than growth alone.

3. As the kids grow their interest in food decreases and interest in play activities increases so that they eat small quantity and run away to play. As parents we need to be more patient and feed than less quantity but more aliquots per day.

4. This age rather than the quantity of the food I suggest you concentrate more on the number of times you feed her and also make whatever you feed her calorie dense by adding good amount of ghee to it.

5. I suggest you not to use appetite stimulants (LIKE PRACTIN) on long run as they may cause drowsiness.

Dear Doctor,
Thank you for your revert. I have the following questions:
1. Does Txylyx ( cough syrup) Sporidex (antibiotic) neutralize Shohl's solution?
2. What is the difference between growth and development?
3. During and post viral, how long (approximately) does it take for the appetite to return?
My niece has lost about 600 gms during this period and that is very worrisome.
She also seems to find it difficult to swallow food after taking 3 -4 bites. The doctor checked her throat but there is no problem. We think it may be light ulcer in the throat due to excessive medicine.
Please advise.
We have also stopped Practin.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on viral illness - Recovering

Detailed Answer:
Hi....I understand your concern.. Coming to your questions directly...

1. The cough syrup and the antibiotic you have mentioned will not neutraliz Schol solution.

2. Growth means the increase in body mass, weight and height. Development means achieving of developmental milestones like talking, walking, cycling, like language development etc.

3. It takes around 2 weeks for the appetite to completely return to normal after viral illness.

4. If there is sore throat due to viral illness obviously the throat will be red and the child will find it difficult to swallow. If the child is otherwise active give some time for recovery. Gradually the child will be able to swallow and appetite will increase by itself.

I wish your kid a speedy recovery. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link.
