Question : Hi,

My son has a vitamin D deficiency with a value of 12 ng/ml. He is 13 years old. The rest of values, Calcium and Phosphataze Alcalin are normal. I was adviced for an injection with D3 at 200.000 IU once a week, for 3 weeks. It is the optimal dose? Also the doctor told me nothing about Ca supplementation.
Please advice me in this regard.

Brief Answer:
Both oral dose and injection is important

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

The dose of vitamin D injection is ideal. It will act as a depot storage. It has to be backed up with Oral intake which will serve as a daily maintenance dose. Vitamin D aids calcium absorption. There is no indication that there is lack of calcium supply in the diet. Hence all that is needed is vitamin D supplementation in order to enhance calcium absorption.
