Question: I took a Benzonatate 100 about 2 hours ago. At first my cough toned down a bit. Just a little while ago I had a couple of sips of very hot soup. As soon as it hit my throat I went into a coughing jag that was almost stroke strong. Along with it there was a strange taste like the capsule I took hours ago broke?? I'm calmed down now. I feel a little out of sorts too. Thank you for your consideration.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be voice box irritation.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having cough after benzonatate.

It is an anti tussive, can cause numbness of the chest, hypersensitivity causing broncho spasm, laryngospasm and stomach upset.

Your cough could be due to the hot soup hitting the voice box leading to bouts of cough and aspiration of stomach contents (capsule mixed food).

In my opinion, it takes time to relieve from burning chest. Mean time, you can take ppi inhibitor (Prilosec) one tab, before breakfast.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
