default
Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: Dr rogala, my 69 year old wife flu symptoms yesterday about 5 pm, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, went on through the night and subsided mostly by 8 pm, about 27 hours, but still has abdominal cramps and feels like may be sick. My concern is rectal bleeding since about 6 last night. I does not seem to be too much, red stools, some clots. Do we need to go to emergency room or wait until tomorrow to see if bleeding stops?

Brief Answer:
Capsule omeprazole, probiotic and stool examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome.
I have gone through your query.
Based on the information it looks like gastroenteritis. I would suggest you to observe and if frequency diarrhea increases or she appears to be dehydrated, it is better to go ER.
I would suggest you to make her take adequate fluids, she should not be dehydrated.
As you have mentioned that the vomiting and the diarrhea has stopped, medication for the same, need not be started.
I would suggest you to eat small frequent meals, take electrolyte powder, take yogurt which will be beneficial. Avoid spicy food, alcohol and smoking, avoid junk food.

To address the pain you can take dicyclomine ( antispasmodic), which you are taking.

Apart from this I would suggest you to take capsule omeprazole 20 mg once daily empty stomach before breakfast for 3 days and probiotic like ecobion sachets or sporolac sachets two to three times a day.

I am not suggesting you to start antibiotic, I would have asked for stool routine and microscopy investigation, and based on the report I would have decided on the requirement of antibiotic.

This provisional advice provided by me is based entirely on the input provided to me. I would suggest examination by the doctor.

I hope this suggestion might be of some help to you.
Take care.
