Question : My 23 year old son has been vomiting all night. He told me he had been drinking last night. He cannot even tolerate sips of water. Should we wait it out or should I take him to the E.D? Is there an OTC antiemetic we could use?

Detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It depends how dehydrated he is. To determine it please check his heart rate, blood pressure, urine color, urine amount, mouth dressiness.
If his heart rate is higher than 100, blood pressure is low, urine is dark and its much less then usual amount of urine, his mouth is dry, he is dehydrated and needs some drips. If his heart rate is lower than 100 and blood pressure is fine, you may wait half a day.
In US OTC antiemetic is Dimenhydrinate (it is used to prevent motion sickness but should fight his vomiting as well). Please also ask him to put some pressure with his hand on the umbilicus and hold it for an hour or two. This also should help with vomiting. Instead of water please try to give him some warm tea. You may also put some heating pad on his stomach. This should relax smooth muscles and in that way prevent vomiting.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
