Brief Answer:
I suggest to start with the blood tests and the thyroid tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear user
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

Water retention can occur in many different areas of the body.Swelling caused by fluid retention where excess fluid is trapped in the body's tissues is called edema. You have edema of the feet and probably in all your body because you have a significant wheight gain.

There are a lot of reasons that can cause edema: Congestive heart failure,Cirrhosis,Acute or chronic kidney disease,Hypothyroidism,Weakness or damage to veins in your legs,Inadequate lymphatic system,Pregnancy,pre-menstrual syndrome ,Sodium-rich foods.

I suggets to start with a blood work for the kidney or hepatic diseases that can cause edema and the thyroid tests(TSH,freeT3,freeT4) to understand if you have low thyroid function and than to do a heart and abdomen ultrasuond.

The differential diagnosis of fluid retention is complicated. If the neurologist and the vascular surgeon have excluded their respective causes of edema my advice is to talk with your GP about the right direction when to check and the right specialist to consult, accordingly to blood results and heart and abdomen ultrasound results.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Blood test showed sodium low

Answered by Dr. Elona (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Hyponatremia can be a probable cause of your fluid retention.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
If your bood tests are normal except low sodium this means that we can exclude hepatic and renal disease from the potential causes of your edematic condition.

Low Sodium or hyponatremia occurs when the sodium in your blood falls below 135 mEq/L. When this happens, your body's water levels rise, and your cells begin to swell,so hyponatremia can be the culpit of your edema.

Your doctor should know about this and accordingly to the Sodium level in your blood work,to you can discuss with him about the treatement of your hyponatremia.

In my opinion you will have the right diagnose after the cardiologist consult and the thyroid tests results because the doctor will have a lot of necessary information to detect the right cause of your fluid retention and than you can have the right treatement.

Hope my information is helpful for you.
Best regards.

Echocardiogram was normal

Answered by Dr. Elona (17 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Thyroid panel needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

When the heart weakens and pumps blood less effectively, fluid can slowly build up, creating leg edema.
If your echocardiogram was normal,we can exclude Heart disease ( congestive heart failure ).

Now i'm waiting your thyroid test results.

Last think :If your serum sodium is < 121 mEq/L;i suggets a stringent restriction of water intake.

Hope my information is helpful.
