Suggest Treatment For Weakness In The Legs

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Feb 2017
Question: If I have been in a sitting position for more than 30 minutes (with my legs down or with them up, as when i read in bed), I walk fine for about 5-8 steps, then I have a sudden loss of power which gets progressively worse in seconds, in my legs. There is absolutley no pain associated with this. I have to stop walking, hang on to something or sit and it will go away withing about 2-3 minutes. I do not feel light headed when this happens. It hits both legs at the same time and equally. What might cause this. I have had this for years.

Brief Answer:
Get B12, folic acid levels and basic endocrine work up

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through.

Based on the history you have shared, it can be early menifestation of vitamins and micronutrients defficiencies like of Vitamin B12, B12, B1, D3, folic acid and calcium so it's better to get the levels of D3, B12 and folic acid done to start with. Also other endocrine issues like thyroid profile and sugar levels should be reviewed alongwith essential electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and sodium levels as their defficiencies can cause such symptoms.

If these turn out to be normal, local causes like nerve issues which had shown mild hints on EMG and should be monitored with radiotherapy of lumbar spines to rule out nerve root compressions. Partial pressures on these may present with normal NCS at start but features of mild intermittent weaknesses.

Meanwhile supplements for B12, D3 and folic acid may also be started and may have useful implications. Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
