Suggest Treatment For Weight Loss

Question: I am struggling with weight loss. What are my options? With my second child I was on bedrest so I gained a lot of weight. I am 5'4". At my best I am around 130ish (pre first child). After the first one, I jumped up to 160lbs and had trouble keeping it off, never went back down. After my second, I went up to 195 with 36% body fat (Feb 2013). After recovery, I started my intense workout of 2 hours a day, 5 days a week in April 2013 and by August 2013 I was down to a stable 160lbs and 32% body fat(with a couple days at 159!!) In September, I started having some pains in my legs and I continued to run. By October, I couldn't walk and the doctor told me it sounded like shin splints and I had to take it easy. Plus, I had an incident where I had sharp pains in the chest through the middle to the shoulder blades as if someone was stabbing me with a dagger when I was running. This occurred about 4 times in October. So I continued walking for a couple weeks then gave in and actually rested for a few months. During this time, I would exercise every couple of weeks until early-December when I was just constantly ill with the cold/flu bugs that were going around. My last "OFFICIAL" day of exercise was December 8th. And since then, I have already regained alllll my weight back!!! I am now 187 and it hurts to walk sometimes. My doctor told me my breathing, chest pain, random numbness etc was all because of my weight gain but... I had it all when I complained in October and at my lesser weight so it wouldn't make sense that my symptoms are weight induced. I don't know what's wrong with me... but to get him off my back about the weight I want to lose weight but physically hurt too much to do so - I do about an hour of consistent powerwalking every day during my shift patrols. My diet is average - I eat until I'm full, not stuffed but even then, my appetite is almost completely gone. I tried the eat small portions but regularly but I just gained even more. I am lucky to eat 2 meals a day and I don't snack. Even if I'm eating just salads, my weight doesn't change. I rarely eat red meat, I eat mainly chicken and fish. I always have vegetables in my meals and I try to keep the meals I do eat as balanced as possible under the food guide. Doctor says it's my caloric intake that makes me fat but I don't know how else to fix it! If I eat less than what I'm eating now, I will be starving and I get even more nauseated, heartburn, dizziness, blurred vision, and fatigue than I already am... Advice?

Brief Answer: Aerobic exercise not for you Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. I hope you have gotten some blood tests done to rule out common causes of weakness. For chest pain you should get an ECG and echocardiography done. Now you are mostly concerned about how to lose weight. Your BMI is 33.5 kg/m2. You are in the category of obese and losing some pounds will definitely help. My advise would be as follows: - Avoid high calorie foods like milk products (cheese, butter, ghee, sweets, etc) - Avoid non-vegetarian food as it is absorbed as a whole - Start your meals with salads and buttermilk, and stop eating when you are just full. - Avoid snacking in between. For snacks choose from a variety of vegetables and fruits; avoid potato, colocasia, yam and sweet potato. - Consume 2.5 to 3 liter of clean drinking water and other fluids like lemon juice, fresh soup - Diet should consist of 3 meals and 3 small snacks. More than this is not required in a day Now coming to the exercises, You need to exercise at least 20 min a day. Take a small snack before you go for exercise. I think you can safely go for yoga exercises. These exercises are mostly stretching type of exercise and would not strain your heart or make you feel breathless. These are available as 5 day courses. When you learn it, you can do it comfortably at home everyday. These should be continued till you regain your stamina. Then slowly you can include other exercises in your regimen. You need to avoid all the aerobic exercises including power yoga till you are comfortable with it. Also do not overexert at any single exercise. Hope it helps. Will eating less than the 3 meals 3 snacks hinder me? I only eat 2 meals and no snacks. I feel bloated and gross if I eat more than that. As for fluids... I've been abnormally thirsty and drink roughly 4-6 litres a day and still feel thirsty. Doctor wouldn't do blood tests .... But I had donated blood and I know I'm not anemic at least. I'll look into getting back into yoga- but I usually do about an hour of power walking a day due to work. I have the ECG and a lung stress test scheduled to be done and had a chest X-ray to wait to hear back from still.

Brief Answer: Do not take a heavy dinner Detailed Answer: Hi again I am not sure how much you are eating in the two meals. I would rather avoid two heavy meals and take 3 light meals instead. The breakfast should be heavier than the rest of the meals. Dinner should be light. To avoid bloating cook your food in clean water (not tap water) and drink cleaner water. You may be getting stomach infections that may be leading to bloating. Can go for blood tests as a yearly check up. Yoga is available as 5 day courses. Check in your neighborhood if a course is happening nearby. Power walking in workplace will not help reduce weight since it is done under stress. Dr Vaishalee
