Question: Hello, I have a 5 day old wet and dry cough that is causing me a severe pain and needle sensation in my upper chest when I cough and it is beginning to scare me because it is so insense. I have lots of drainage w/color from my sinuses as well when I cough. I am having very sharp pains on at my hairline & on top of my head continuosly that began over 1week ago. I do use 2 nasal sprays reguraly, & singular and most recently added claritin. The coughing and drainage is not improving yet. Should I go to an ent?

Brief Answer:
may need to be seen

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Severe persistent coughing can be associated with the chest pain that you are describing.

The coughing would be due to the irritation of the upper airway from the secretions and also irritation of lower airways as well

In addition to the decongestant and other treatments that you are doing, you may need to consider- (1) adding a topical decongestant to the oral, if you are not currently doing this eg otrivine

(2)a mucolytic to help break up the mucus so that it can be expelled easier eg mucomyst

(3)if you have bronchitis which is inflammation of the airways that is usually associated with a wet cough, you may need a short course of oral steroids ( 3 to 5 days), to reduce this inflammation

If there is no improvement then antibiotics may be needed

It would be best to see your doctor or ENT for assessment.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
