Question: My husband is 63 yr old and been a pretty heavy drinker for maybe 30 years. He also may smoke 2 packs a day. I am noticing a large mood / behavior change. Fail mood, forgetfulness, yellowing of the eyes or redness. He is an over the truck driver. These behavior changes have me greatly concerned. What can I do ? He has never physically harmed me or anyone. But he does have a negitive attitude. When he is home average 2 days a week he starts about 10:00 am and drnks solid till he needs a nap. Mixing beer, wine and Lord Calvert. Several of each. I do not know what to do,

Brief Answer: Cognitive and behavioural therapy. Detailed Answer: Hello there, Welcome to Healthcare magic, I have gone through your query, as your husband is chronic alcoholic and smoker, am really concerned about his health. Mood swing and lack of memory and interest are seen commonly in alcoholics. Am happy to know that he never harmed you or anyone else, it shows he is kind in heart , so feel free to have a word with him that you are really worried about his health and spend some time to know his interest . The best way to divert his mind from alcohol is to participate in activity which keeps him away from alcohol. Ask him whether he is willing to quit or reduce the amount he is taking every day, If he is willing to reduce, rehabilitation centres are of much value . Cognitive-behavioural therapy, help him to recognize, avoid and cope with situations in which they are and avoid them from using the substance again. Take him for meditation and yoga centres which helps to keep his mind fresh and healthy. But always have this in mind, sudden withdrawal from alcohol results in ALCOHOL WITHDRAWL SYNDROME [symptoms due to sudden decrease in alcohol level in body], so I insist to reduce the dose slowly. Take care. Dr.surendiran.g MBBS PGD[Geriatric medicine]
