Question : My opthalmologist checked my eyes today and told me I have tiny signs of cataracts. He said there is no way of knowing how fast they will develop, if at all. He said ir could be five years or twenty five, and it's simply a part of aging for everybody.
What is your opinion about this? Thanks.

                                    Brief Answer:
Early cataract.
Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
Other than what he has already told you, there are few facts that you can note. If there is raised blood sugar, that is to be controlled. Few medicines like steroids increases cataract formation. Otherwise it is a normal aging process and the development is unpredictable, but it is rapid in younger patients and very slow in older patients.
Now since you know it but apparently do not have symptoms, have six monthly or yearly checkups to monitor the progress and do get back to me in case of any further query in this regard.

Thank you Dr. Misra. I am just 60 years old and have no diabetes issues. So would that indicate I fit into the regular category of obtaining them with "aging"?
My mother who is 80 had one 20 years ago and then another 10 years ago.

My dear,
Good of you to get back to me.
Aging in the body starts from birth.Brain starts shrinking from 30 yrs to 60. Then brain atrophy is not measured. We personally measure aging not on chronological basis but how your body is behaving.
Here your family history is important, which is good. Take due care of yourself, regular exercise, diet and rest. Have regular checkups to monitor progress and you will be fine.
