Stammering can be treated with medicines and psychological methods

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. A lot of males have issues of stammering and this cause significant impairment to their functioning but fortunately the stammering can be treated with medicines and psychological methods.

In most of cases with stammering underlying anxiety is the main reason for symptoms. This is the main reason stammering usually increases in anxiety provoking situations or in events of stress. Social anxiety and fear of being judged by others is also one of main cause.

A lot of individuals with stammering respond to anti anxiety drugs like SSRIs in stemming. SSRI medicines especially Sertraline or Escitalopram have good efficacy in reducing the stress associated with stammering and this also help in reduction of frequency of stammering. Some other medicines like Propranolol also helps to reduce the severe anxiety in anxiety provoking situations especially in social situations. Both of these medicines can help to resolve your problem. Please visit a psychiatrist for detailed help and evaluation.

Psychological methods are also very helpful in stammering. Relaxation exercises, yoga both have excellent efficacy in stammering. Other methods like Fluency Training or Fluency shaping are helpful in stammering. Try to speak in front of mirror especially the words which result in most incidences of stammering.

During talking to someone don'r rush to say your words. Most of individuals suffering from stammering due to underlying anxiety rush to speak their words which result in worsening of problem. Don't force the words instead speak in normal tone, relax yourself prior to talking and think the sentence before you speak this will help to control the word tone. Visit a psychiatrist for detailed help and prescription of medicines I have mentioned.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care

Brief Answer:
It should be psychological and not neurological

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again

Aggravation of stammering with headache or sleepiness points more towards some psychological cause rather than some neurological cause. In neurological reasons the stammering should be persistent and should remain through out the day.

Thanks, Please ask again for more doubts.
