Suggest Ways For Weight Loss Caused By Hypothyroidism

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,

I am 5.7 and weigh 80 kgs. I have tried everything possible to lose weight, and it isn't working. My weight keeps fluctuating between 76 and 81 kgs. My target weight is 68 kgs.

I eat as right as possible, with minimum junk. I have my dinner before 8pm. I go for a walk 4 times a week for about 40 minutes and I go for a cardio intensive dance class (1 hour) on Saturdays and Sundays.

I work in a private firm, with a considerable amount of travel. However, I do my best to eat right when I travel as well.

I recently got some tests done for an acne breakout, and my hormone levels are normal. I have a high TSH 3rd generation, but my family physician has asked me to repeat the test after 6 weeks to assess if I need medication as the value is below 10. My periods are regular and my cycle has moved from 28 days for the last 15 years to 34 days over the last 1 year.

I have been to dieticians in the past, but their recommendations end up working for 1 month and then stop working.

Please help.

Brief Answer:
Most likely due to hypothyroidism.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query and reports. Difficulty in weight loss for you is most likely under active thyroid ( subclinical hypothyroidism). This will give a slow metabolism and difficulty in weigh loss. Taking low dose thyroxine like 25 mcg will be helpful for this.

Also check your lipid profile. LDL cholesterol can be high in most of these cases due to low activity of thyroid.
By supplementing low dose thyroxine your problem will be solved most likely.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

Hi,

My LDL levels are normal. 68. My HDL levels are lower than the lower limit (60) vs the desirable >62.

If I start taking thyroxine, is it for life or is it only for a fixed period of time? Is there any natural way of correcting this like any particular foods/exercise?

Brief Answer:
Diet and life style might help in some.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up query.

Diet and life style might help in some. Check your thyroid peroxidase antibodies test also to rule out whether it is autoimmune (hashimotto) hypothyroidism. In such case some changes in diet helps. Check for vitamin D levels also. If it is low taking supplements is good.Vitamin D deficiency also can cause hormonal (thyroid) problems
Avoiding coffee and refined sugar.
Avoiding refined grains and flour and use whole grains and flour.
Eat organic foods. Organic grass fed meat, eggs and milk products can be used.
Also you can consume fish or omega 3 supplements.
Take probiotics. You can take yogurt or curd for this.
You can also take glutathione rich foods like grape fruit, avocado, spinach , garlic raw egss etc. This helps in fighting the autoimmune condition.
Practice stress relaxation by deep breathing exercises.
These all measures helps if your hypothyroidism is due to autoimmune condition.

Thyroxine supplements is or life time. Dosage is changed after testing TSH on follow ups 3 monthly.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
