Regards Dr XXXXXXX and many thanks for your time to answer my question. I would like to ask a few follow up questions...If the sphincter of Oddi is not functioning normally can it be corrected through medication or surgery? And if it requires surgery what is done to correct it ? And finally can something inside burst if left untreated...because it feels like it could. Once again many thanks for you time and effort. Sincerely XXXXX

Once the diagnosis confirmed patient can undergo a sphincterotomy during the same procedure to open the duct and relieve pressure.
This is the only effective treatment option. A number of medical therapies have been tried, but none has been successful.
Some success with calcium channel blockers can be obtained but only at doses so high that the side effect profile is prohibitive.
