Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I completely understand how you feel and would like to start by explaining something to you before I go into a few other details.

Our internal body is well protected from the external environment mainly because there are many infection-causing organisms in the external environment that can cause serious damage to our general well being. Any breaks or interruption in this balance can result in serious infections, and so on.

The placement of a catheter in itself provides a pathway for bacteria to enter the internal environment resulting in infections. From my 5 years specially placed in the emergency department (although I do not work in that department anymore), I have come across several cases of patients who are dependant on catheters for draining their bladders. And I would like you to understand that a catheter gives way for bacteria to enter the internal environment that can result in numerous infections.

In all such catheter dependant patients, we have to always take precautions to prevent infections. If at all an infection does result, we initiate a course of antibiotics. But in your case we cannot do that, and I have seen numerous patients who have had the same fate. In such individuals, we maximise our defence against infections by increasing catheter care; following was done:

-Instead of using the usual (Foley's catheter) which had to be changed at least once every week as they can result in infections, we used synthetic silicon catheters which can be left in place for almost 3 months at a time. This reduces the risk of infections that can be contracted by removal and placement of a new catheter every week

-Improved catcher site insertion care: We need to make sure the site of insertion is cleaned very often as this is the point from where the infection-causing organism can enter

Unfortunately ma'am, antibiotics are the best and only available treatment option for infections. If we are left without antibiotics, we are completely restricted and can only opt for extra diligence to avoid infections. Above are the approaches used, and if at all they have already been employed there is nothing more we can do without antibiotics, but if they have not yet been used then please do consider them.

I would also recommend a few home remedies that may not help eliminate the infection, but can help reduce or suppress symptoms to a mild extent, they are:
-Drink plenty and more water
-Cranberry juice as tolerated
-1 tablespoon baking soda in 1 glass of water to be taken at least 3 times a day

I hope and pray you find relief from the above suggestions ma'am. I am sorry that we have very limited options without antibiotics, and I only pray for your comfort and increased quality of life. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best of luck and best wishes ma'am.
