I have read your query and understand your concern.
You have to go for diet changes as well as make lifestyle changes to improve upon your HDL levels like.....
Cutting on bad fats like transfas and consuming good fats like olive oil,fatty fish etc.
Quit smoking
Alcohol in moderation.
Regular aerobic exercises with resistance training 
Shedding your weight
Eating fresh fruits and green vegetables and nuts
Cutting on sugar
Consuming some dark chocolates
All these measures would gradually improve upon your HDL cholesterol.
