Suggest Ways To Manage Pain When On Vicodin And Celebrex

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
While working out yesterday I severely strained my lower back. I've rested, iced, used a foam roller, everything as I should. The only pain medication that touches the pain has been 2 Vicodin. I had Celebrex in the cabinet and took one this morning (9am, no Vicodin since 5am.). I am in a lot of pain and am worried that the Celebrex won't help. Will I be able to take any Vicodin today since the Celebrex is long lasting? I am a 46 year old woman in very good health.

Brief Answer:
yes, several other points

Detailed Answer:
yes, there is absolutely no interaction between celebrex and vicodin. There's a potential interaction with vicodin and anything iwth TYLENOL in it, cince vicodin also has tylenol in it. Estimates vary on the number of overdoses of tylenol from literally everyone overdosing on it (I am skeptical of this estimate) to about 200 cases per year in the US. Tylenol (and narcotics for that matter) are bad in overdoses but not so bad otherwise.

next point. I'm less skeptical of reports that in a disk causing lower back pain, non-steroidal antiinflammatories are not very effective. Vicodin good, celebrex, not much. On the other hand, there's very good data that physical therapy, accupuncture, probably chiropracty , definitely good massage therapy are all helpful on disk associated back pain. You might also try mild stretches under a warmhot shower.

Thanks for the info, especially about non-steroidals not working very well on back pain. The Celebrex definitely is not working very well so I'll take another Vicodin shortly. I will be seeing my sports chiropractor tomorrow, just want to get through the weekend with manageable pain.
