Suggest Ways To Manage Severe Pain While On Clonazepam And Gabapentin

Posted on Fri, 18 Nov 2016
Question: I was in therapy thought I had found the right place and medications that work for me but they will no longer see me over a billing error that I have tried to get corrected. I am almost out of my medications and need help.
I am having trouble finding someone close to my home area that offers what I am looking for in my own care. I have seen a psychologist for over a year and that didn't help I only got worse. I need the medications to keep balanced and I know that it is not good to be off medications that have been prescribed suddenly. I feel so frustrated and am trying to get help. I need to know if you will continue my current medications? They have brought me back to life and I feel alive again. I was in so much pain, feeling overwhelmed, emotional pain and I thought the Nurse Practitioner and Psychologist were the answer and now I am just left feeling hopeless and scared of going back into a dark place that my medications pulled me out of. I am out of my dextroamphetamines but I do have 30 days on my Clonazepam, Gabapentin and Cyclobenzaprine

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

The substances you are interested in continuing (dextroamphetamine, clonazepam) are Schedule 3 controlled substances under purview of the DEA. No prescriber can prescribe them over the internet -- you must be evaluated in-person. I will also add that an "upper" (dextroamphetamine) in general should not be mixed with a "downer" (clonazepam), so I question the validity of that approach. All this said, I know of an excellent clinic in XXXXXXX near where you live, the XXXXXXX Psychiatric Clinic, phone (804) 320-7881. I would give them a shot to evaluate you for medication management strategies.

Dr Sheppe,

I do not live in XXXXXXX VA although I do appreciate your recommendation for additional medical help. I live in XXXXXXX VA and XXXXXXX is over an hours drive away from my home.

Detailed Answer:
You may need to travel to XXXXXXX for psychiatric care, every month or so. Many of my patients travel from more than an hour away to visit me, as psychiatric care is limited.
