Suggest Ways To Normalize Bowel Movement After Colostomy

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: In 2011 my wife had an abcess on her colon which burst. This resulted in her having a nonreversible colostomy. Approximately one year later my wife had a small bowel movement through her rectum. We thought this was impossible so we talked to the doctor who performed the colostomy. He said this was not abnormal and was no cause for concern. Since that time my wife has experienced a lot of abdominal pain and doctors have been unable to determine any cause. Last week my wife had another small bowel movement through her recturm and a couple days later a second bowel movement but this time the stool was very hard and about the size of a tangerine. If this colostomy was performed properly would this be possible and, if a normal occurrence, what precautions should my wife be taking to assure that this lower section of her systems stays cleaned out?

Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Post-Colostomy Care / Under Evaluation

Hi,Dear !! Thanks for your query to HCM.
Read and reviewed query facts in context to your health concerns of post-colostomy distal colon bowel movement per rectum.
Dear,as the information about the Colostomy details are not accompanied, Please update picture of Colostomy and discharge notes of attending doctor, to assess your current problem.

My Primary Impression and suggestions.
After getting further details about colostomy notes and colostomy picture,I
Would be giving my suggestions.
Based on the submitted data, You seem to have non-reversible end colostomy for the Colonic abscess with distal colon being kept oversewn in place.
Bowel movements from the distal colon is your current health issue and would be replied on available data.
More specific replies and suggestions would be given later, after getting more details as asked above.

Till that time, Replies to your specific Questions based on available data are as follows-
Q-1-If this colostomy was performed properly would this be possible and,
Ans-1-More case specific reply would be given later on, after receiving more details as asked above.
Dear, with end colostomy, this is a normal happening. The distal colon depending on its length, would evacuate the mucus and secretions, which would be discharged after re-absorption of water contents in rectum. This would depend on the volume loads, which would depend on the length of the distal colon left in place with the oversewn colonic end.
So don't get worried about these rectal movements.

Q-2- if a normal occurrence, what precautions should my wife be taking to assure that this lower section of her systems stays cleaned out?
Ans-As nothing is being loaded from upper segment of colon, and as the distal section would function as living segment, inspissated thick mucoid balls with epithelial cells and organic matter with normal bacterial flora, would be evacuated in normal course, for which no need to worry at all.

So these rectal movements need to be taken as normal bowel anal evacuations in normal course and maintained as usual bowel movements.
