Suggest Ways To Postpone The Menstrual Cycle

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: Hi,

I want to delay my menstrual cycle by 6-7 days for an event which is scheduled from 6th- 10th august.
My last month date was 1st July, 2015.

I am a patient of rectal fissures and have been taking meds to avoid constipation and avoid any bleeding in the rectal region.

coming back to my question:
1. Would regestrone be advisable in that case?
2. Since when should I take it owing to my last month date.

Brief Answer:
delaying menses

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
As your LMP was on 1st july, and your event is on 6-10th august then ideally you should have started progesterone pill ( norethisterone 5mg twice a day) from day 22 i.e 23rd july onwards.
So you can start it immediately and continue it daily for as long as you want to delay your menses, say till 10th august. And after you stop the pills, then in next 7 days you should be resuming your menses again.

But as I seeked advise that would it anyhow affect my present condition of having rectal fissures, for rectal fissures I have been given a stool softener .

Also, if I start right away, will it help to take these pills or is it too delayed to help the situation at all?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
You can continue the stool softener and increase your water intake to 4-5 litres a day for softening your stools, along with the progesterone pills and you should start the pill right away at double dose 5mg twice a day and there are chances that you might be able to delay it. It is seen that if started by day 26 , the chances are that you may not be able to succeed in case your cycle is 28 days. You can always start, but if you get a bleed then you must not continue as that would indicate that menses have started and you have been late.

Hi Doctor

For my rectal fissure, there was one question that I had.

I am these days studying for these exams and sleep really late in the wee hours of the morning, i.e. around 5 am. Does that in any way affect my condition if I drink sufficient water and take the stool softener?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I would like to appraise you that the are stressfull days for you and lack or deprivation of sleep can actually further increase constipation but adequate water intake and usage of stool softeners SOS can help you maintain normal stools and thereby cause worsening of fissures.
