Suggest Ways To Prevent DVT In Legs During Arthroscopic Surgery

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I had right knee surgery 7 months ago and developed a DVT. I've been on Xarelto for almost 7 months and have only had a reduction from 80% stenosis to 40% in my popliteal and femoral vein along with other veins below my knee.

Now i have to have almost the exact same surgery that I previously had on my right knee in 5 days. It's arthroscopic - mostly for torn and damaged meniscus.

Of course my biggest concern is to not get any more blood clotting in my right leg or brand new clotting in my left leg. I've heard about different techniques. One is a Sequential Compression devise: Link here: http://www XXXXXXX com/Nitring-M02-011N-76534-Circulation-Wraps/dp/B002JF8ZD8

Please help me decide on a plan to prevent any more DVT or clotting post-op. Can you offer a list of things to do, and also your input on the link?

Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
The sequential compression will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Few days before the surgery, Xeralto will be stopped and will be resumed few days after the surgery. Since it is an arthroscopic surgery, too much bed rest will not be required so the chances of having a DVT are lesser. To reduce the chances further you can use the circulation wraps as mentioned in the link. It causes alternate compression and relaxation of the calf muscles that improves the blood circulation in the legs. Such devices are the only way to reduce the chances of DVT while you are on bed rest. In addition to it you can do a quadriceps drill to help improve the circulation.
Do discuss about DVT with your operating surgeon.so that he can advise an early ambulation and restart Xeralto as soon as possible.
I hope this answers your query.
