Brief Answer:
Healthy diet , regular lifestyle , aerobic exercise and medicine .

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Considering the age of 59, in most probability your father has essential hypertension. However ruling out atleast kidney as secondary cause of hypertension. Because in that case it might be reversible. A renal doppler and USG- KUB which is sonography of the kidney and its vessels; Baseline blood test; kidney profile; urine for micro albumin and eyes check up for retinopathy; Echocardiography and TMT for heart will complete the evaluation of the patient .

Now the Primary Aim is to keep the blood pressure under control whether it is with diet , exercise or medicine .
1) try maintaining blood pressure upper under 135 and lower under 85mm hg with lifestyle and medication as required
2) if overweight, losing weight should be a priority, try achieving bmi less than 25.
3) 40-45 mins of aerobic exercise daily which includes walking , jogging , swimming , light sports atleast 5 times a day
4) be regular with your medication, don't skip doses or stop abruptly.
5) in diet -low salt. XXXXXXX 3 gms a day. - avoid preserved food, as all preservatives have salt. - no pickles, papads, chips, farsam as all have high salt and. - atleast 2 serving of fresh fruits in a day. - 1 serving 35-40 gms of nuts like walnuts, almond to be included - if you take fish 2 serving of fatty fish per week like salmon. -avoid red meat, egg yellow, fried and spicy oily food - may shift to better oils like olive in cooking
6) may consider supplements, like cod fish oil capsules, flax seeds, chia seeds, krill oil as they have good content of omega 3 fatty acid.
We generally know everything, it's just following which is important.
Lastly if there is any stress event going on in life, dealing with it in a mature way so that it doesn't affect your health is important .

Do message me his blood pressure reading , medication he is taking , what diet he prefers , so i can send you a diet plan , and precaution to be taken with medicine .
